Quantum Networks: The Subsequent Web?

A quantum internet is on the horizon

The advances in quantum technology are so advanced that technology innovators are creating startups to bring commercial products and services to market. This has caught the attention of many business and technology strategists! At this point, some of these commercial products don’t seem that far in the future. One of the quantum technologies that fits very well in this area are quantum networks. If you haven’t heard of quantum networks, you are not alone. However, this has gradually changed and will no doubt accelerate in the near future.

Quantum networks

Quantum networks will become an essential element in the information systems of the future. Quantum networks provide important communication with quantum computers right from the start of the development of this new technology. Quantum networks transmit several forms of data and information that have been converted into qubits (quantum bits). A quantum processor, system or device converts the data / information into qubits and sends it over a network to another quantum processor, system or device. Probably the biggest advantage of quantum networks is the level of security that they have embedded in their design. This benefit is achieved through quantum encryption, which at this point makes it impossible to break into, steal and decode the data so that it can be read, used and / or understood.

Based on Quantum’s current state, quantum network technology products and services are expected to experience robust growth over the next few years. A 2020 report published by Inside Quantum Technology (IQT) estimated the global quantum network market at $ 5.5 billion in 2025. Considering quantum encryption as an independent security solution shows another robust market. Markets and Research reported that the global quantum cryptography industry would top $ 1.5 billion in 2027. Given that both technology segments were still on the whiteboards of researchers a few years ago, this is significant growth.

like the internet

There are currently some key networks that are vital to day-to-day operations and are already protected by quantum encryption. As quantum connectivity and encryption continue to advance and become business solutions, they are likely to protect a growing portion of a country’s critical infrastructure, digital communications, and information. Another quantum-associated movement has begun.

This initiative examines the potential of a quantum internet. The continued advancement of the quantum technologies just discussed has enabled experimentation into their application in the next generation of the Internet, and this is well underway. Some startups have already begun exploring the commercial opportunities related to developing the technology and services of a quantum Internet. With all of the hacking and cybercrime that exists on today’s Internet today, the potential value of a quantum Internet is easy to understand. However, some existing Internet players would be adversely affected and would likely resist the move to a quantum Internet.

It seems that the issue is no longer whether a quantum internet will be the next big step ahead, but rather when it becomes as dominant as the internet is today. In mid-2020, the US Department of Energy (DOE) and the University of Chicago announced their blueprint on the development of a national quantum internet at a press conference. There are a growing number of people who believe that the foundation for the global quantum internet is being laid now and the DOE announcement clearly supports their thinking. Once a global quantum internet is in place, operations over the quantum internet will be much faster and far more secure.

Note: Resistance to a quantum internet is out there and won’t go away anytime soon. After all, among all those who could benefit from such progress, there will be those who lose!

Given all of this and its estimated implications, individuals and organizations should take action. Here are some suggestions:

  • Quickly implement quantum technology into the science and technology curriculum of high schools, colleges, and universities. (Qualified quantum resources are currently in short supply!)
  • Professional organizations should develop and deliver continuing education modules that address quantum networking, quantum encryption, and quantum internet development.
  • Instructors should incorporate The Quantum Internet and Quantum Networking into the personal development courses they plan to take over the next few years.
  • Stay up to date with developments by creating online notifications looking for new web content on the elements of quantum technology that interest you.
  • Companies should analyze how quantum technologies are having a positive and negative impact on their industry, products and services and plan to do so.

With all of the emerging technologies coupled with the continual change environment we have entered, a continuous educational model needs to be developed and implemented quickly. Without such an operating model, people, businesses, and even countries will suffer from technological uncertainties. Once in this position, it will be extremely difficult to overcome!

Conclusion

All of this is just a small part of the emerging global technology renaissance that is afoot and with no end in sight. Again, quantum networking, quantum encryption, and the quantum internet are another set of integrated technologies that will have a significant impact on all of us in the not too distant future. So it would be a good idea to oversee the evolution of quantum technology in general – quantum networking, quantum encryption, and the quantum internet. As quantum technologies move forward and near where they are a common part of the world, considerations must be given about their integration, disruption, and possibilities.
