The primary sources of federal education funding programs for states and school communities and the primary purpose of each program are:

Helps schools with economically disadvantaged students

2. Law on the Education of People with Disabilities (IDEA)
Supports children with disabilities

3. Emergency / Critical Needs
Aid packages to support a wide variety of urgent needs

Federal funding comes from two types of grants, and different rules apply to how the funds are used:

• Formula grants
Determined by Congress; States are allocated, then the funds are given to school communities

• Freely selectable grants
Awarded through a competitive state and school community grant application process
