How to involve learners during virtual training
Virtual training has become the norm due to the 2020 pandemic. Most of the classroom training had to be moved online, with instructors using virtual tools like Zoom, Webex, Teams, and others to run the sessions.
But did the transition go smoothly? Did the instructors and participants face any challenges while attending the virtual sessions? The answer is yes. “
Initially, some trainers recreated the classroom experience in a virtual environment, resulting in a kind of fatigue for the participants. There were technical problems in conducting the meetings. Tip 1: Make the sessions lively, engaging, and not too long
The first principle or rule is to ensure that the sessions are engaging and lively with a good dose of student participation. You can do this by engaging them in a team activity or game. Avoid the lecture-only mode. It is not easy to pay attention to each participant in a pure virtual mode, unlike in a private, in-camera session.
A virtual session should not last longer than 45 minutes. There must be a break of at least 15 minutes before you can move on to the next session. If the first session was related to some theory, make sure the second session is activity-based. That way, the virtual sessions don’t get boring or monotonous. We have found webcam fatigue in virtual sessions. People cannot look into the camera for long and their eyes become tense. These are some important things that need to be done.
Tip 2: use technology that works
You can use the technology that works well in your company. Some prefer Zoom sessions while others use Webex. Use the technology that gives the participants the best experience. Test everything including streaming video, audio quality, and screen sharing before starting the session.
Some of the tools offer the survey function, breakout rooms, groups, breakout discussions as well as live question and answer functions. You can use breakout rooms or breakout sessions to allow a group of participants to think and work together. Breakout sessions allow learners or case study participants to work, work well together, and perform various activities that are usually possible in a personal setting to ensure participants do not feel left out.
Tip 3: use recorded videos and games
You can use videos to deliver meaningful messages to your audience. Many participants need the powerful medium of video to connect to the core message. If you can get the help of a video provider, just go for it. Get the best videos to get the message across. Ultimately, it’s about getting the message across to learners so that they understand the concept well and can apply it to their work.
You can also use gamification , Scoring and leaderboards to engage learners in a fun way. Games can break the monotony and motivate learners to participate in sessions. You can use games to get the necessary attention from learners.
