Evaluating Teaching vs. Mentoring – e-Studying Infographics

Coach or mentor?

Coaching and mentoring are similar but involve different skills and a different approach. In general, mentoring is a long-term relationship while coaching is short-term and focuses on tasks and training. The best place to start is to define coaching and mentoring.

Coaching: The International Coach Federation (ICF) defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential”.

Mentoring: A simple, broad definition of mentor is “an experienced and trustworthy advisor”. The Oxford Online Business Dictionary defines mentoring as “a staff training system that employs an older or more experienced person (the mentor) as an advisor, advisor or guide to a junior or apprentice. The mentor is responsible for providing support and feedback to the person who belongs to him / her. ”A note to clarify, while many organizations offer in-house mentoring programs, often as part of a leadership training program, it is common for mentees to work with Mentors working together outside of their organization.
