Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, a Gaelic festival that marks the end of the harvest season and welcomes winter or “the dark half of the year”. The ancient Celts believed that during Samhain, the doors between the physical world and the spiritual world would open, allowing more interaction between people and the souls of the dead.

Held between the fall equinox and winter solstice, Samhain was one of the four main festivals on the Gaelic calendar, celebrating with people lighting campfires and wearing costumes typically made of animal heads and skins to ward off evil spirits.

In the 8th century Pope Gregory III determined. November 1st as a time to honor all the saints, a celebration known as All Saints’ Day that incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The night before, October 31st, is Halloween, which comes from the Scottish term for Hallows ‘Eve (the evening before All Saints’ Day).

Over time, All Hallows Eve evolved into Halloween, and thanks to the massive Irish and Scottish immigration of the 19th century, Halloween became a major holiday in the United States.
