Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, a Gaelic festival that marks the end of the harvest season and welcomes winter or the “dark half of the year”. The ancient Celts believed that during Samhain, the doors between the physical world and the spiritual world would open, allowing more interaction between people and the souls of the dead.

Held between the fall equinox and winter solstice, Samhain was one of the four main festivals on the Gaelic calendar, celebrating with people lighting campfires and wearing costumes typically made of animal heads and skins to ward off evil spirits.
