Airline Business: 2020 Was Worst 12 months on Report

At the height of the crisis in April 2020, 66% of the world’s commercial air transport fleet was on the ground as governments closed borders or imposed strict quarantines.

  • In 2020, 1.8 billion passengers flew, a 60.2% decrease from the 4.5 billion that flew in 2019.
  • The industry-wide demand for air travel (measured in passenger kilometers or RPKs) decreased by 65.9% compared to the previous year.
  • The 2020 drop in air passengers carried was the sharpest since global RPKs began to be tracked around 1950.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released the IATA World Air Transport Statistics (WATS) performance figures for 2020 showing the devastating impact on global air traffic in the year of the COVID-19 crisis:

Aviation Industry: 2020 was the worst year on record

  • 1.8 billion passengers flew in 2020, a 60.2% decrease from the 4.5 billion that flew in 2019
  • The industry-wide demand for air travel (measured in passenger kilometers or RPKs) decreased by 65.9% compared to the previous year
  • International passenger demand (RPKs) decreased by 75.6% compared to the previous year
  • Domestic Air Passenger (RPK) demand decreased 48.8% compared to 2019
  • Air connectivity fell by more than half in 2020, with the number of connections between airports falling dramatically at the beginning of the crisis and falling by more than 60% year-on-year in April 2020.
  • Total industry passenger revenue declined 69% to $ 189 billion in 2020, and net losses totaled $ 126.4 billion
  • The 2020 drop in air passengers carried was the sharpest since global RPKs began to be tracked around 1950
