Quickly Design and Develop eLearning – A Guide for Enterprise Trainers

Discover what fast eLearning is, how to align it with your business goals, and what tools you need for this task!

1. Fast eLearning for onboarding with a mixed twist

Our client is a US-based contract research company (CRO) providing non-clinical, preclinical, clinical and commercial services to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.

Training needs

Our client had expanded their business by acquiring several new businesses. Because of this, they had to take on thousands of new employees in multiple roles and
Departments and train them.

Training challenges

  • The employees of the target group were at different geographical locations, which meant that the use of face-to-face training was excluded.
  • They needed a guiding hand when entering a new organization.

The CommLab India solution

We first worked with subject matter experts from each department to identify the training needs for each role and categorize them into general and specific topics.

We then developed a mixed approach for each role:

  1. Learners first had to go through a series of eLearning courses that covered the theory.
  2. Then they had classroom sessions to interact with a teacher and get hands-on experience.
  3. After the training, they had performance-supporting tools for just-in-time learning.

Results

  • 7 eLearning courses, 51 classroom presentations, 5 supporting documents delivered
  • Project team: 1 dedicated project manager, 5 instruction designers, 12 developers
  • Project duration: 1175 working hours

2. Conversion of over 1000 old courses

Using Rapid eLearning

Our customer is a global security and certification company based in the USA. They provide standards and safety certifications for electrical and electronic products, building equipment, plastic materials, and wires and cables.

Training needs

Our customer had a repository of over 1000 legacy courses developed in Adobe Presenter and older versions of Storyline and Lectora. These courses are designed to train your sales and service technicians on their processes, policies and products.

Training challenges

  • Source files were missing for most of the courses.
  • The design, and in most cases the content, was out of date.
  • The courses had to be designed in an appealing way for desktops, smartphones and iPads (both in portrait and landscape format).
  • There was also a briefing to design performance support assets to facilitate just-in-time learning.

The CommLab India solution

Since this was a large project with multiple challenges, we adopted our 4 “R” strategies for quick eLearning conversion.

  • Recording – For legacy courses with missing source files, we ran the courses in an external player and recorded them in MP4 format. Interactivities like hotspots and click-to-reveal were later added to the videos to make them more interactive.
  • Republish – For courses that were developed in older authoring tools (with source files but outdated content), we extracted the relevant media objects, updated the content and republished the courses with the latest version of Lectora Desktop.
  • Reconstruction – Lectora helped us convert non-mobile compatible courses into responsive courses. Lectora’s Responsive Course Design (RCD) function enables courses to be published in a fully responsive format regardless of screen size and orientation (and without additional adjustments).
  • Redesign – We salvaged all sorts of content and media resources from courses with outdated learning designs and used Lectora’s built-in templates to redesign courses to suit modern learners and their new learning expectations.

Results

  • Converted over 1500 courses
  • Project team: 2 project managers, 3 project managers, 30 developers
  • Project duration: 45,000+ hours of work

3.. Time saving for SMEs with fast eLearning practices

Our customer is a global enterprise software company that provides companies with independent and open software to increase efficiency and make business decisions in real time.

Training requirements

Our client’s main requirement was to train their salespeople in creating new business opportunities. They decided to step out of the classroom and digitize their sales training to equip their employees with dynamic sales skills to meet changing market demands.

They wanted us to create nine different curricula for salespeople working for nine different customer industries, with some shared courses.

Training challenges

Converting classroom training material to online training using fast eLearning evolution is a simple task. However, our biggest challenge here was the involvement of several SMEs, as each customer branch had a different SME. An additional challenge was the limited time we had to advise the SME.

The CommLab India solution

We have collected all of the customer’s training material for the main content to be used in the courses.

Given their busy schedules, we asked SMBs to create “quick and dirty” PPTs on their training topics with voice recordings explaining each slide.

After receiving the SMB’s presentations with voice recordings, our L&D team created a prototype for each curriculum and sent it for review via an online assessment app.

After the prototype was approved, our team was able to create 9 curricula (15 courses each) without involving the SMEs in the process. In some courses we have also used excerpts from the voice-over presentations of SMEs.

Through this iterative development process and quick and dirty presentations from SMEs, we were able to complete this extensive project on time, with each SME involved in the entire process less than 5 times.

Results

  • 9 curricula supplied with 15 courses each
  • Project team: 3 project managers, 3 instruction designers, 6 developers
  • Project duration: 4 weeks
