Chancellor Angela Merkel was the first European head of state to visit US President Joe Biden in the White House, as topics such as US trips to Europe were on the agenda.

  1. Topics of the bilateral talks were climate change, COVID-19 vaccines, Russian cyberattacks, Ukraine and strengthening its democracies as well as travel between the USA and Europe.
  2. The recent surge in COVID-19 cases due to the Delta variants has led the US to ease travel restrictions.
  3. Chancellor Merkel was confident with the American COVID team.

President Joe Biden said he will soon be able to answer questions about traveling from Europe to the US when he called in members of his COVID team when Chancellor Merkel raised the question during her bilateral talks today. Merkel said she had “every confidence in the American COVID team”.

Despite the fact that Europe eased restrictions on American travelers last month, the US maintains strict travel restrictions due to the proliferation of the Delta variant.

Tori Emerson Barnes, Executive Vice President of Public Affairs and Policy, US Travel Association, made the following statement on President Biden’s comment on reopening international travel:

“We welcome the comment made by the President today with Chancellor Angela Merkel that more information about the lifting of international travel bans could come ‘within the next few days’.
