Are You Prepared For A Expertise Expertise Platform?

From the LMS to the Learning Experience Platform

Which components make up your company’s learning ecosystem?

The Learning Management System (LMS) has become commonplace in most academic and corporate environments. This software system contains traditional learning resources such as eLearning courses, recorded webinars and virtual training courses and assessments. In addition to hosting these assets, the LMS also automates the process of reporting, tracking, and documenting data such as completing a course. The LMS is an indispensable workhorse in the world of learning and development, although other more innovative systems are now available for more customizable applications.

Learning Experience Platforms (LXPs) overcome some of the UX limitations of an LMS. Recognized for creating a superior employee experience, LXPs provide features for easy access to workflow learning, capturing learning experiences that take place outside of traditional workgroups, and providing in-house expertise through user-generated content. These cloud-based systems often use gamification elements and artificial intelligence and can offer learners more unique personalized experiences.

The growing gap in employee skills

A major factor affecting both individual and organizational performance is the skill gap defined by the training industry [1] as: “A gap between an employee’s skills and the skills he or she actually needs to do a job well.” A recent McKinsey study [2] reported that “87% of companies say they have skills gaps or expect to have skills gaps within a few years” and that 43% of these companies are currently identifying skills gaps in their organizations. This worrying trend can be resolved in a number of ways, including hiring and hiring new employees. However, 53% of executives polled by McKinsey were in favor of retraining their existing employees. That bodes well for the third of employees surveyed in a 2019 Harris survey [3] cited underdevelopment as one of the most common reasons for leaving a job after dissatisfaction with their salary.

Given the great attention paid by employers and employees to the skill gap and the need for development in the workplace, the need for a robust software infrastructure that leverages both L&D and HR data is evident. Skills, competencies and behaviors need to be mapped to current and potential employees, and learning trips need to be created to nurture and retain talent within the company. Employee performance management is best done proactively rather than reactively to fill the growing skill gap. If talent is truly your company’s most important asset, treat it as such and make sure employee experience management is part of your strategic plan.

Manage employee performance

Traditional performance management is still alive and well in most organizations. We still need systems to set annual goals, enable regular check-ins and take advantage of development opportunities.

The creation of the Talent Experience Platform (TXP)

As you read through the above, you are probably thinking either, “We can’t all afford,” “Boy that’s complicated,” “or my goodness, what a nightmare to navigate and integrate all of these isolated systems.” Enter the Talent Experience Platform. The latest in this development of talent and HR systems is the Talent Experience Platform (TXP). The term “talent” refers to an organization’s most important asset: its people. All employees with the ability or potential to contribute to the company’s performance can be managed through a TXP, a software system that helps develop employees and create a sense of belonging and purpose for their work as well as for their development. By combining L&D and HR systems, the TXP enriches employee experiences at work by promoting engagement [4] and performance.

With a great challenge comes a great opportunity. Executives who closely monitor industry trends and have a keen interest in employee experience find success with novel approaches such as measuring their performance gaps using quantitative data. Companies are considering how to attract and retain top talent, offer their employees meaningful career paths, and improve informal learning in the workplace and the exchange of knowledge across the company. By enabling employees not only to learn on the job, but also to use new skills and knowledge, companies are transforming from inefficient bureaucracies to agile, resilient workplaces that are equipped for the challenges of today and tomorrow.
